Focus on Point Loma University’s Athletic Facilities

The University’s athletic facilities have often been called the most beautiful in America. The facilities include six tennis courts, soccer field, baseball field and gymnasium. The gymnasium can be used for a variety of functions including volleyball and basketball or as meeting space for groups of up to 2,500.

Nestled on the seaside cliffs of Point Loma, overlooking the Pacific Ocean, no other collegiate baseball park can match the picturesque views and comfortable setting of Carroll B. Land Stadium on the campus of Point Loma Nazarene University. Coaches, players and fans marvel at the beautiful park and the magnificent surroundings. The immaculate green grass of the playing field is outlined by the blue sky and sea. Its cozy dimensions offset by the prevailing winds blowing in off the ocean. In 1993, Kevin Kernan of the San Diego Union-Tribune was on the Point Loma campus covering the NAIA Volleyball tournament. Walking beyond the gym, he was amazed upon viewing the university’s spectacular baseball field. Charmed by the baseball facility, Kernan wrote an article that appeared in both the local Union-Tribune and the national Baseball America magazine. The title of the article, “America’s Most Scenic Ballpark.” The nickname has stuck ever since.

Most recently the soccer and track & field facility has gone under a $250,000 transformation in order to provide the men’s and women’s soccer programs the best possible playing surface.  New irrigation, drainage, and a completely new grass surface have made the soccer field into one of the premier soccer facilities in Southern California.  In combination with the location and athletic facilities, this makes Point Loma soccer facility an absolute must see.

Golden Gymnasium is the host building for the women’s volleyball team and the basketball squads, it was built in 1962 by the Golden Construction Company. With seating for 1,750, Golden Gym can handle the traditionally large crowds of Homecoming basketball and has hosted multiple NAIA National Volleyball Championships. Its unique configuration allowed for the set-up of three regulation volleyball courts, which the NAIA utilized during the national tournament (1992,1993,1995,1996, 2002, 2003) when three matches are played at once, from early in the morning until late at night. The San Diego Chargers, US Olympic Decathletes, and US men’s and Women’s Olympic volleyball teams are among others who have used Golden Gym. Various commercials and television promos have also been shot in the building. Golden Gym also houses several offices and the weight room, located on the ground floor behind the east bleachers.

Point Loma Universty Introduction

Point Loma Nazarene University (PLNU) is a Christian liberal arts college. Its main campus is located on the Point Loma oceanfront in San Diego, California, United States. It was founded in 1902 as a Bible college by the Church of the Nazarene.

Affiliation

PLNU is one of the eight U.S. liberal arts colleges[10] and universities affiliated with the Church of the Nazarene.[11] Although its name might suggest that it is the college for the “Point Loma” region, no such region currently exists;[12] PLNU is the college for the “Southwest Region” of the United States, comprising the northern California, Sacramento, central California, Los Angeles, Anaheim, southern California, Arizona, New Mexico, and Hawaii districts, which include California, Arizona, New Mexico, Hawaii, and parts of Nevada, Utah, and Texas.[13] Each college receives financial backing from the Nazarene churches on its region; part of each church budget is paid into a fund for its regional school. Each college or university is also bound by a gentlemen’s agreement not to actively recruit outside its respective “educational region.”[14] PLNU has been accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges since 1949.[15]

Academics

Point Loma Nazarene University has a “commitment to educating students as whole people.”[16] The University offers more than 60 areas of scholarship as Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Science degrees, as well as graduate degrees. There were 3,480 students at the college in 2007, 2,346 of whom were undergraduates.[17] The 2007 acceptance rate for students who applied to the college was 53.5 percent.[18] PLNU has all the usual academic programs for both undergraduates and graduates. One unique feature to the university is the School of Theology and Christian Ministry. The school also offers special programs such as study abroad and an honors program. PLNU is home to a variety of majors including Nursing, Psychology, Biology, Chemistry, Business, Finance, and Accounting just to name a few.
